  • STEM program strengthens Fort McCoy, community ties

    FORT McCOY, Wis. -- Fort McCoy allowed environmental and natural resources staff members to share their knowledge and on-the-job experience with teachers from nine area school districts at a July 20-21 workshop here. Mark McCarty, chief of the Fort McCoy Natural Resources Branch, said the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program workshop provides innovative instructional programs, supports students who typically are underrepresented in STEM areas of studies and increases the academic achievement of students in these subjects. The program grant was funded by the U.S. Department of Education and was administered through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. By strengthening ties between the school districts involved and Fort McCoy, the program supports the principles of the Army Community Covenant, McCarty said.

    GRAFENWOEHR, Germany - On July 2, a final tree was placed along Grafenwoehr's 100-year Allee in Grafenwoehr Training Area (GTA), about 5 kilometers from Rose Barracks, and near Range 201. The stand of trees was placed to symbolize the success and close cooperation between the U.S. Army, the U.S. Army Garrison and the Federal Forestry Office (FFO) at Grafenwoehr, a relationship spanning little more than half of the training area's 100-year history.

Although the numbers are down, in calendar year 2008 an estimated 7,000 injuries caused by fireworks were treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms, as cited in a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission 2008 annual report.

    The Army Materiel Command Band's Army Birthday concerts this past weekend in New York's Capital District has left thousands of area residents 'thinking' about the band members as great musicians due to three superb performances. But more importantly, area residents will 'remember' the band as great Soldiers due to their ability to use music to connect the community to its Army. Although the Albany area is not a military community as one would find at Fayetteville, N.C. that borders the Fort Bragg, the Albany area is nevertheless a community with military. And tucked away between U.S. Army Reserve and New York State Guard units is the U.S. Army Watervliet Arsenal. Given the Arsenal is the only active-duty Army post between West Point and Fort Drum, it was appropriate for the Arsenal to step up and share the Army's 235th Birthday with the local community.
