    WAHIAWA, Hawaii - The lone, mournful sound of a fiddle wafts outside a white church located less than a mile from Wahiawa Botanical Garden on California Avenue. Behind the rectory's window panes and sliding doors is anywhere from a dozen to 16 casually dressed musicians. They sit in a meandering, uneven circle. Here and there, half-empty styrofoam cups and plastic water bottles sit next to or under brown chairs, in arm's reach of a thirsty musician.

    The observation of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday Jan. 17 gave us all an opportunity to see how far America has come in realizing the dream he spoke of to the nation during his "I Have A Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Monument in Washington, D.C., Aug. 28, 1963. No one can know what King would have felt about American society today; however, in my opinion, I think he would be able to recognize the incredible progress we have made, while still holding us to task for what we have yet to achieve. While the election of President Barack Obama may stand as the most symbolic proof of American progress, in looking around my everyday life, I am struck by the more low profile happenings that I believe prove our nation's true growth.

Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., has led to a national debate on the current state of political discourse and the appropriate level of civility between people of differing viewpoints and beliefs. Giffords, who is recuperating after surgery to fix damage suffered from a gunshot wound to her head, is a member of the Democratic Party. The alleged gunman, 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner, has been reported as being partly motivated to carry out the shooting due to his holding political beliefs that run different to those of Giffords and her party.     Residents of Germany just survived the coldest December since 1969, and in doing so received a barrage of snow not experienced in years. The area around the Army garrison here received several storms and tallied nearly 60 centimeters of snow accumulation, resulting in several days of delays or closures for garrison services and schools. Franconia enjoyed its first white Christmas since 1981. While many employees and students looked forward to enjoying a long morning at home during these weather delays, the tireless employees of USAG Schweinfurt's Directorate of Public Works knew that the snow days would be long ones.

In addition to being the solid waste services provider for all of Pierce County, LeMay has been the Lewis Main and North solid waste contractor for several years. Shelia Albrecht-Martin, the JBLM Public Works solid waste and recycling outreach coordinator, said the new single-stream recycling system is actually easier to use because nearly all recyclables go into the same 90-gallon cart.

    In spite of the cold weather, the new Army Ground Forces Band building is still tracking on schedule. "We should finish the shingles in a couple of weeks and then work will focus mostly on the inside," said Project Manager George V. Blackard of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Fort Bragg office. "Exterior brick work will also begin in a few weeks, which will bring out the true shape and color of the building." The placement of interior studs is well underway as are the mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins. The band will move to Fort Bragg with Headquarters, Army Forces Command, the summer of 2011, in accordance with the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure legislation.

    Operation Family Timeout, a program created and coordinated by the Rock Island Arsenal Army Community Service in 2005, continues to provide "free time" opportunities for the spouses of deployed military service members, as well as mobilized Department of Army civilians. Family members of deployed personnel from all branches of the military and mobilized civilian employees, whose children are ages six-weeks to 12-years-old, may use the program. Most importantly the program provides a support network for military family members who all share a common bond.

Thirteen Soldiers of the 2-306th Field Artillery Battalion Red Dragons, 188th Infantry Brigade, served as Santa's elves after recognizing a need to provide gifts for children at Liberty County Head Start. The Soldiers of the battalion typically make weekly visits to the school; however, a busy mobilization cycle limited their participation this year.
