    <b>What is it' </b> The National Safety Council has designated June as National Safety Month and with this in mind, Soldiers, leaders and family members should think about how they can "Play It Safe" this summer. Historically, off-duty fatality rates increase from April to September, consequently there is a greater emphasis on warm weather activities such as grilling, water-related activities, ATV riding, dirt biking and more. Seasonal dangers include heat injuries, drowning, food preparation and storage dangers, sunburn and fireworks injuries.

    The 410th Contracting Support Brigade, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, recently hosted members of the Brazilian Army, providing a glimpse of the various contracting officers' roles and responsibilities within their command. Their visit to the 410th began with Col. Ted Harrison, 410th CSB commander, providing an overview of the U. S. Army Acquisition Corps, an explanation of how the U. S. Army trains its military and civilian acquisition officers, Army contracting force structure and the 410th CSB and its capabilities. Harrison also explained to the Brazilian officers, the historical role contracting has played in meeting the needs of the United States military while utilizing a smaller uniformed military force, citing actions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    There is still a need for relief efforts, according to Paul Maguire, Catholic Medical Mission Board regional representative and presenter at a Fort Monmouth employee-organized Haitian relief luncheon. According to Maguire, a second-round of amputations will occur because many of the amputees have contracted infections due to improper or unsanitary procedures performed immediately after the disaster.

    <b>What is it' </b> The commander of the U.S. Army Medical Command has directed the establishment of a U.S. Army Public Health Command (USAPHC) as a subordinate command. The creation of the USAPHC will integrate select missions from the U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine and the U.S. Army Veterinary Command (VETCOM) to form the core of the USAPHC. The USAPHC became provisional on Oct. 1, 2009, and includes all of the USACHPPM missions and services. Select missions (levels III-V) of VETCOM will become part of the USAPHC (Prov) in spring of 2010 and fully integrate by Oct. 1, 2010.

    They applied tourniquets to legs severed by improvised explosive devices, survived Humvee roll-overs, and eliminated the enemy with M16s... then they dusted off their uniforms and provided contracting expertise to get vital supplies and services to our warfighters. It's all in a days' work for the contingency contracting officer teams of the Expeditionary Contracting Command, training to deploy. The teams are relatively new. Their formation began when the Army recognized the need for Soldiers proficient in contracting to deploy with Army units. When the Army formed the Army Contracting Command and its subordinate Expeditionary Contracting Command in 2008, the teams and the 51 C military occupational specialty were born. These contingency contracting specialists have been growing and improving their efficiency and effectiveness to fulfill their wartime mission ever since.

    Staff Sgt. April Johnson, contingency contracting officer with the 410th Contract Support Brigade at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, proved to be the best of the best at the end of the two-day competition where she captured the honor of being selected as the Expeditionary Contracting Command's first NCO of the Year. The competition took place at Camp Bullis, Texas March 15th to March 16th. "The most challenging drill was the land navigation course. The terrain had very few flat surfaces and the checkpoints were difficult to find," said Johnson. "But through preparation and hard work I was able to successfully complete the course."

    Soldiers in Blanchfield Army Community Hospital's Warrior Resiliency and Recovery Center (WRRC) participate in a session of the Return to Duty (RTD) program. In the RTD program, Soldiers practice combat skills under stress. In one exercise, Soldiers work quickly to dress a dummy's wounds in a simulated battlefield environment complete with loud explosions and screams blaring from loudspeakers and smoke pouring from fog machines. Many Fort Campbell Soldiers undergoing treatment for mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) have the opportunity to go through this functional assessment to prove to themselves and their medical care providers at the WRRC that they are ready to deploy with their units.
