PEACHTREE CITY, GA — August 27, 2009 — Dr. Linda Curtis, Area Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Cuba, (DoDDSCuba) announced today that Dr. Harriet Hunter-Boykin has been named assistant superintendent for the North Carolina District.

Hunter-Boykin, a native of Suffolk, VA, has more than 30 years in the education field as
both a teacher and an administrator. She most recently served as the assistant superintendent of the Heidelberg District, Heidelberg, Germany. She was a principal and an assistant principal in three other schools in DoDDS Europe. Before becoming an administrator, she was a team leader with the “Framework for School Improvement Support” program and was assigned to Schweinfurt Middle and Bad Kissingen Elementary schools, both in the Bavaria District in Germany. She also worked at DoDEA headquarters in Arlington, VA.

Before coming to DoDEA, she was an associate professor of Secondary Education at The George Washington University, Department of Teacher Preparation and Special Education, and an assistant professor at Howard University in Washington, D.C. She also taught mathematics for 11 years in the Washington, D.C. public schools. “Dr. Hunter-Boykin has a strong curriculum background with a wide variety of experiences that will benefit our students,” Curtis said. “She is anxious to become involved in our stateside schools and share her leadership experiences.”

Hunter-Boykin received her Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Mathematics Education from Norfolk State University, Norfolk, VA. She earned her Master’s of Arts Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of the District of Columbia, and her Doctorate of Education Degree with a major in Educational Administration and Curriculum from George Washington University, School of
Education and Human Development, Washington, D.C.
