Petraeus Attends Retirement Ceremony, Armed Forces Farewell

Lynn III attend Petraeus' Armed Forces Farewell and retirement ceremony on Joint Base Meyer-Henderson Hall, Va., Aug. 31, 2011. Petraeus retired after a 37-year military career to become CIA director.

Soldiers Compete in Sappers Exercise in Alaska
A UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter carries soldiers to participate in the Order of the Arctic Sapper competition on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, Aug. 17, 2011. The soldiers are assigned to the 6th Engineer Battalion. Six teams of 8 to 11 soldiers competed in mountain climbing, rappelling, river crossing and other combat engineer events.

U.S. Marines Modify Culverts to Increase Safety in Afghanistan
U.S. Marine Cpl. Jesse L. Tabor places a cage over a culvert along a busy road to prevent insurgents from inserting explosive materials inside in Helmand province, Afghanistan, Aug. 19, 2011. Tabor is a metal worker assigned to the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group. The operation lasted four days and engineers covered nearly 33 miles of Route 606, one of the country's busiest roads. The cages, known as culvert denial systems, will increase safety for troops and travelers.

Troops Respond to Irene's Force, Offer Aid

The UH-60 crew is assigned to the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade from Fort Stewart, Ga. Troops Participate in Vibrant Response 12.1 in Indiana
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Rogelio Moreno and Petty Officer 2nd Class Harley Meyer fill out a field medical card for a simulated casualty after decontamination processing during Vibrant Response 12.1 at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in Butlerville, Ind., Aug. 19, 2011. Moreno and Meyer are corpsmen assigned to the Marine Corps Chemical Biological Incident Response Force. Vibrant Response 12.1 is a two-week exercise that simulates the aftermath of a 10-kiloton nuclear detonation in Cincinnati.
