Col. Darrell Thacker, deputy commander for Marine Corps Installations East – Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, speaks on some of the current events and upcoming changes for MCB Camp Lejeune during the 18th Annual State of the Community Breakfast aboard Marine Corps air Station New River Feb. 12. Thacker spoke on behalf of the base’s leadership and explained what the military’s budget cuts may mean for the installations as well as the community.

The breakfast featured speakers from different sections in the community, including the Onslow County Schools superintendent, Coastal Carolina Community College’s president, and the Mayor of Jacksonville. They spoke on some of the new happenings and challenges each sector will face during 2013.

Pierson said MCAS New River is expecting to add two new helicopters to their fleet, and is expected to add two entire squadrons from MCAS Cherry Point by 2014.

The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society helps thousands of Marines and sailors each year and celebrated its 109th birthday aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Jan. 23. With over 109 years of service, NMCRS grew to over 3,600 volunteers. NMCRS supports service members through nearly 250 offices ashore and afloat at Navy and Marine Corps installations worldwide.

Members of Navy Marine Corps Relief Society break frosting in celebration of NMCRS’s 109th birthday aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Jan. 23. Founded in 1904, NMCRS staff originally consisted of only 19 volunteers. The first NMCRS office was started with a portion of the $9,000 proceeds collected from a football game between Army and Navy.

Marine Corps Installations East - Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeunes’ executive officer, Col. Darrel Thacker, congratulates and wishes Navy Marine Corps Relief Society a happy 109th birthday aboard MCB Camp Lejeune Jan. 23.  During 2011 NMCRS disbursed more than $48 million in interest-free loans and grants to Marines and sailors in need.  The society thrives through the support from selfless and dedicated volunteers.

Supervisors receive annual Back in the Saddle training aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Jan. 10. The training was made mandatory for civilians in 2013 in an attempt to greatly reduce the number of mishaps and work-related accidents aboard the base.
