This year Kaiserslautern's substance abuse program was the winner of the 2012 Secretary of Defense Community Drug Awareness Award. It beat out programs at Army bases around the globe and was the only overseas program among all the services to win top honors.

A new piece of equipment under evaluation, called Romer Net, proposes to solve this issue and eliminate any middlemen by instantly obtaining the frequency of any aircraft overhead and translating it into a usable signal for all parties involved.

For the 210 Infantrymen in F Company, 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, it's the newest skill they've learned. Spc. Matthew Batzel, who chose the Special Forces Enlistment Option when he joined the Army, said the realistic urban operations training helped him feel more ready to fill his role as a Soldier. "We haven't done anything quite like this yet," he said. "This is the exciting stuff. This is why a lot of people joined. The little things are starting to make sense -- why we do certain things. I definitely feel more comfortable becoming a Soldier."

Ken Anderson, personnel officer-in-charge for 2nd Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, Task Force Lightning Horse, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, when he recently came across his own type of a family reunion when he met up with his brother in Afghanistan.

    Veterans, part of the 317th Troop Carrier Group, came out to Fort Benning Friday to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the unit, which started in 1942, during World War II. More than 100 veterans and their spouses attended the Heritage Flight and Troop Drop event, where they watched the World War II Airborne Demonstration Team drop from a World War II C-47 Transport Aircraft used by the 317th. The demonstration team wore vintage paratrooper uniforms.

USAG Yongsan's first responders were put to the test as they were presented with various scenarios, which measured the garrison's ability to properly handle emergency situations. "The goal for the full-scale exercise is to test our plans for emergency preparedness and anti-terrorism," said Robert Daul, antiterrorism officer for USAG Yongsan. "This will give us a chance to exercise our Standard Operating Procedures and our capabilities, and have external evaluators to see what lessons we can learn and how we can improve safety for the garrison and the Community."
