    A fish kill was reported in Youghiogheny River Lake, Confluence, Pa., on Sept. 7, and continued to kill fish for about two weeks afterwards. Around the same time, unusual deposits of iron and a strong sulfur odor were reported in the Youghiogheny River, just downstream of the dam.

"After viewing first-hand the enormous challenges facing Everglades restoration and meeting with our partners in this effort, I am absolutely convinced that working together, we can achieve restoration goals and improve this ecological treasure for future generations."

    Q. What is a levee? A. The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) defines a levee as a "man-made structure, usually an earthen embankment, designed and constructed in accordance with sound engineering practices to contain, control, or divert the flow of water so as to provide protection from temporary flooding." The terms dike and levee are sometimes used interchangeably. Examples of levee systems in the Houston area are the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-constructed Texas City and Vicinity Hurricane Protection System, Freeport and Vicinity Hurricane Protection System, the Port Arthur and Vicinity Hurricane Protection System and the locally constructed levee systems in Fort Bend County.

    Q. What are the Addicks and Barker Dams and Reservoirs? A. In response to devastating floods that occurred in Houston in 1929 and 1935, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District began construction of Addicks and Barker Dams in what was then undeveloped areas in far west Harris and east Fort Bend counties to prevent the loss of life and property and provide flood damage reduction along Buffalo Bayou downstream of the reservoirs and through the center of the City of Houston. Construction of the Addicks and Barker structures were completed in 1948 and 1945 respectively.

  • DLNR and Corps of Engineers sign agreement to kick-off West Maui "Ridge To Reef" initiative

    The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Honolulu District (Corps) signed a $3 million cost-share agreement today to develop a watershed plan to support the West Maui "Ridge to Reef" Initiative. The Initiative is one of the first efforts in the state to implement a comprehensive management strategy to address impacts to coral reefs across multiple watersheds. The watershed plan will be funded 75-percent by the Corps and 25-percent by DLNR.

    Newly appointed 53rd U.S. Army Chief of Engineers and Commanding General of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Lt. Gen. Thomas P. Bostick, was taken on a whirlwind tour of major projects happening in the Chicago District during his Aug. 27-29 visit. Chicago District staff were honored to show off the significant strides they are making on a variety of projects to the senior military officer overseeing most of the Nation's civil works infrastructure and military construction. Projects visited covered a diversity of mission areas, including flood-risk management, navigation, ecosystem restoration and invasive species efforts.

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District Logistics Management employees Dale Free and Heath Drako recently competed in Ironman Germany triathlons. The Ironman, organized by the World Triathlon Corporation, is a premier long-distance sports competition of swimming, biking, and running for athletes in peak physical condition. Free completed the half-Ironman on August 12 in Wiesbaden and Drako completed a full Ironman in Frankfurt, Germany.

A year ago, Maier rotated into the Engineering and Construction Branch as part of the Department of the Army intern program and was assigned his first humanitarian assistance project. Maier's arrival transformed a one-man operation into a two-man team.
