  • Full scale exercise tests emergency capabilities in Korea

    "EXERCISE EXERCISE EXERCISE!" echoing across U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan signaled the start of the annual full scale exercise held here, Oct. 15 - 19. USAG Yongsan's first responders were put to the test as they were presented with various scenarios, which measured the garrison's ability to properly handle emergency situations. "The goal for the full-scale exercise is to test our plans for emergency preparedness and anti-terrorism," said Robert Daul, antiterrorism officer for USAG Yongsan. "This will give us a chance to exercise our Standard Operating Procedures and our capabilities, and have external evaluators to see what lessons we can learn and how we can improve safety for the garrison and the Community."

    As dusk approached on Sept. 24 on Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, a C-17 Globemaster III arrived to load two UH-60 Black Hawk MEDEVAC helicopters for movement in support of the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade. The Black Hawks were brought to Kandahar by C-5 Galaxies which are capable of carrying four UH-60s each. Moving rotary-wing aircraft on fixed-wing assets provide advantages such as longer range and the ability to transport multiple helicopters with the use of only one crew, which effectively saves money and increases safety.

And that is what has been happening with Americans and Koreans north of Seoul in an area called Warrior Country since the Korean War. Soldiers and their families spend afternoon with Korean civilians during the 8th Korean-American Friendship Festival held at the ROK-U.S. Cultural Plaza in the Bosan-dong section of Dongducheon, near Camp Casey's main gate. There was free food. Koreans got to sample American hot dogs and hamburgers while Americans were treated to tteokbokki (spicy cylinder-shaped rice cake) and saengseon-jeon (breaded fish pancake).

The HAST's job is to conduct assessments of key infrastructure in order to assist the host nation's government in getting relief supplies and other support into the country as quickly as possible. U.S. Army Pacific Soldiers are in Tonga this week taking part in "Coral Reef" a joint-multinational humanitarian assistance and disaster relief exercise primarily designed to test the USARPAC Contingency Command Post's ability to react to a disaster. HAST personnel met with members of the Tonga National Emergency Management Office Monday.

    SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii -- Sixty years of chemical and biological decontamination doctrine may soon change as the 71st Chemical Company, 8th Military Police Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command along with chemical elements from around U.S. Army Pacific and Marines from Marine Corps Base Hawaii fielded new decontamination equipment and technologies designed for all services at Area X-Ray, here, Aug. 6 to Sep. 12. The Soldiers tested the Hazard Mitigation, Material, Equipment Restoration or HAMMER family of systems. Comprised of multiple new technologies, the systems are ultimately designed to drastically reduce the time it takes to decontaminate equipment at the team level and beyond. To accomplish this HAMMER uses triage, minimizes the use of water, and focuses on simplicity of use.
