9/30/2012 - JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska -- Col. Robert A. K. Doehl, the vice commander of the Alaska Air Guard's 176 Wing, celebrated his retirement September 23 after 32 years of military service.

"Col. Doehl has been an honor to serve beside and there's no way I could've done it without him," said Col. Donald S. "Scott" Wenke, 176 wing commander. "The wing has been through a lot of change. He has significantly contributed to our success as a wing in recent inspections and our bed down here in JBER."

Doehl started his career in the Army National Guard as a medic. In 1999, he joined the 176 Wing and served in several leadership roles. His retirement from the Alaska Air National Guard was official as of Sep. 1.

His family showed their support during the ceremony and look forward to the future ahead.

"I'm looking forward to spending more quality time with my husband and our two children, Julia and Carl," said Lisa Doehl. "But I also know that it'll be difficult for him to say goodbye to his Guard family, as they all mean a lot to him."

Doehl ended his retirement speech with the wing's well-being still on his mind.

"You are truly a remarkable group," Doehl said.
