Summer Food Service Program
National Summer Food Service Program Week

Chicago SFSP kickoff

USDA teamed up with partners across the country to kick off the first-ever National Summer Food Service Program Awareness Week. The week-long awareness campaign highlights the importance of summer meals and how they help children stay healthy so they can return to school ready to learn in the fall. During the school year, more than 21 million children receive free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch through the School Breakfast and National School Lunch Programs. When school lets out, many of these children face a higher risk for hunger. Hunger can make children more prone to illness and other health issues. The Summer Food Service Program is designed to fill the nutrition gap during summer to make sure children get the nutritious meals they need.
