Down and Dirty with OS X Lion, Google+ and Other Weekend Projects

Mac
During the weekend, you've got time to really get your hands dirty with the tech you love.

Catch up on the news. Eric Mack and I talked to sources close to Amazon and got the skinny on its upcoming tablet. Sources say it'll use free 3G technology to sync up to Amazon's Cloud Drive -- it's the same tech that's in the Kindle, but juiced up to deliver music, photos, even video. After half a year of failed attempts by big hardware makers, Amazon's had time to learn from all those mistakes. With this technology, it's got at least a decent shot at challenging the Apple iPad. If it can deliver.

Need a weekend project? I've got plenty of ideas for you. Definitely create an OS X 10.7 Lion USB bootable flash drive. Apple will be selling USB drives with Lion for $69 a pop next month, but you can make your own. It's a good idea at any rate you never know when you'll install Lion again or reinstall it. Here's how.

You might also try moving your pictures from Facebook to Google+ -- if you're one of the some 20 million people gathering there. Also in BYTE, we show you how to rip and convert you DVDs to a smaller but still quality format -- for backup or for sharing. That's handy in business and at home, too. You've got to back up your DVDs and this is the best way.

Speaking of sharing, setting up a Windows Home Server network is a great way to at home and at your small business. If you've got 10 or fewer people you want to network. Or spend the weekend building your own iPhone app, or doing a fresh install of Ubuntu. It's all here for you this weekend. Have a great one!
