Indianapolis Celebrates Bring Your Child to Work Day

On Thursday, April 19, 2012, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Port of Indianapolis in conjunction with the National Finance Center (NFC) in Indianapolis, Indiana, participated in the 2012 “National Bring Your Child to Work Day” with Beth Pope, the Director of Organizational Development at NFC greeting the parents and children with a hearty welcome address which included a brief history of DHS, CBP, and the many offices that make up CBP. Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO) Clarence (Sam) Cones provided a succinct safety briefing and announced the 2012 Bring Your Child to Work Day agenda to the children.

The first stop was the Indianapolis International Airport where the children attended six stations and took part in various hands-on activities. Those activities included: simulating the duties of a CBPO, an introduction to all functions of a CBPO’s patrol car and detention vehicle, a tour of the Airport Fire Department’s Rescue 990 - 2002 Oshkosh Striker "The Green Hornet,” a small presentation of collected bugs and insects with Customs and Border Protection Agriculture Specialist, Diane Tucker, and two canine demonstrations presented by the Indianapolis Airport Police Department Police and Transportation Security Authority (TSA). To conclude the airport visit, each child received safety booklets and mock security badges from the Indianapolis Airport Police Department.

After a fun-filled morning at the Indianapolis International Airport, the children returned to the NFC where they received presentations from CBP personnel representing various career fields about their daily tasks and work assignments and how they relate to the mission of the NFC and CBP. The guest speakers included, Andrew Kosegi, Deputy Assistant of Chief Counsel, Office of Chief Counsel, Darlene Sedwick, Director of Field Operations - East, Office of Diversity and Civil Rights, Tim Kelly, Safety Training Officer, Office of Safety and Health Division (HRM), Lauren Yeager, Program Manager, Facilities Management and Engineering, Beth Pope, Director of Organizational and Development, Office of Organizational Development, and Anthony Smith, Management and Program Management, Office of Acquisition and Planning.

The program concluded with the presentation of certificates of completion for each child and certificates of appreciation for all guest speakers presented by the Indianapolis Diversity and Inclusion Program Committee. Additionally, each child received a CBP book bag filled with snacks and school supplies.
