Today we remember the victims of Hurricane Camille on the 47th anniversary of this storm. On August 17, 1969, this hurricane made landfall on the Mississippi coast. It was one of only 3 Category 5 hurricanes to hit land as a Category 5. We remember those affected by this devastating storm and would like to keep you and your loved ones prepared this hurricane season. Recovery efforts are still ongoing in Wilkinson County after the August 2016 flooding thanks to volunteers from around the U.S. A Community Based Recovery Committee (CBRC) in Wilkinson County was established in September of this year to coordinate and provide building materials for repairing damaged homes as well as collecting donated essentials (canned goods, water, toiletries, etc.).

The CBRC’s Chairman, Liz McGraw, is passionate about and dedicated to this community and i...ts recovery. McGraw along with the Committee aim to have 10 homes completed by January 2017. The tireless recovery efforts ongoing in Wilkinson County would not be possible without volunteers such as the CBRC, local citizens, volunteer organizations like Americorps, and various denominations of Church congregations from all over Mississippi and even nationwide.

Every donation counts for this community. If you would like to donate or volunteer, please contact the CBRC Chairman, Liz McGraw, at 601-431-9151.

More about the CBRC:
In September of this year, MEMA along with Gov. Phil Bryant and U.S. Representative Gregg Harper awarded a $250,000 post-disaster grant to Wilkinson County to assist residents with repairing homes damaged by flooding. This assistance is being provided by MEMA to the non-profit Community Based Recovery Committee (CBRC) in Wilkinson County with remaining funds from the Alternative Housing Pilot Program (AHPP) awarded to Mississippi by FEMA following Hurricane Katrina. The requirement of the original AHPP grant is that the funds must be used for on-going housing needs as a result of the disaster.

Wilkinson County, through the CBRC, has used 100% of the funds from this grant for affordable home ownership, materials and supplies to repair flood-damaged homes, and rental assistance for low and moderate-income people with on-going housing needs.

"Prior to this initiative, there was never a source of funding to buy building materials for residents who did not qualify for federal assistance," said MEMA Executive Director Lee Smithson. "I am extremely proud of my staff for thinking of a creative solution to help those affected by this disaster."

Thanks to the Rho Iota Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. for hosting our MEMA 4 Kids Disaster Preparedness Campaign at Magee Elementary. Students learned about the different types of natural disasters that occur in Mississippi, how to prepare for them, and what to include in their emergency survivor kits. They even got to meet Jake the Mitigation Wizard, Delta the Disaster Dog, and Pearl the Preparedness Pup. Students were presented with a book on disaster preparedness, a certificate, and a snack/goodie bag from Rho Iota Zeta!

MEMA's Kamika Durr of the Preparedness office represented both MEMA and the Rho Iota Zeta Chapter - thank you Kamika! #GetEngaged #RhoIotaZeta #serviceiswhatwedo

Burn Bans have increased to 77 counties. Make sure that you don't do any outdoor burning if you're in these areas. For more info, check out the link below.

77 Burn Bans Remain as Hunting Season Begins in #Mississippi - To see the full press release, visit: http://bit.ly/BurnBanHuntingSeason16

“Don’t do any outdoor ...burning right now - wait until burn bans are lifted, and drought conditions improve. A small spark can become a large #wildfire when conditions are dry and windy, as they will be this weekend," said Russell Bozeman, Assistant State Forester. "One less spark could mean one less wildfire. No campfire is worth putting people’s lives at risk.”

Deer hunting season (gun with dog) begins November 19, 2016, in most parts of Mississippi. People will be out in the woods this weekend in large numbers, and they will be looking for ways to keep warm. We would like to remind hunters that they should not use a wood-burning campfire, bonfire, fire pit, fire ring, burn barrel - anything with an open flame that produces an ember. A dry, windy, cold front is forecasted to move through the area this weekend. The wind will make wildfire spread more quickly than usual, increasing the risk of devastating wildfire occurrences. #OnlyYou #WildfirePrevention #OneLessSpark

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency brought its “MEMA 4 Kids” campaign to Holy Family School in Holly Springs, MS on October 24th. Office Director of Mitigation Jana Henderson read to students ranging from Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade. She discussed the importance of being prepared and having a plan for all types of disasters.

The “MEMA 4 Kids” Campaign is built around Delta the Disaster Dog, Pearl the Preparedness Pup and Jake the Mitigation Wizard. Delta and Pearl embark on a journey across Mississippi to learn about all the hazards we face and how to prepare for them. At the end of each trip, Jake offers advice on mitigation, which is techniques used to reduce the impact of a particular disaster, on people and property.

UPDATE: Wildfire danger and drought conditions are still elevated for most of the state, and there is no significant rainfall predicted in the 7-day forecast. A...ll burn bans remain in effect at this time. Areas experiencing drought conditions need several consecutive days of steady, appreciable rainfall to provide enough relief from the drought to declare it safe to lift any burn bans.

Please be advised! There is an increased fire danger this afternoon especially north of I-20. Know when your area is under a burn ban and don't do any outdoor burning. There are still 76 out of 82 counties in Mississippi that are under a burn ban. #OneLessSpark is one less wildfire.

Drier air coming back south in the wake of a passing dry cold front will work with occasionally gusty north winds to increase fire danger this afternoon (especially north of I-20).

Please be advised that there are 76 out of 82 counties in #Mississippi under a burn ban. Meaning if your county is under a burn ban, don't do any outdoor burning. One less spark is one less wildfire.
