Coast Guard Announces Final Acceptance of Stratton

The U.S. Coast Guard executed final acceptance of the third National Security Cutter (NSC), Stratton (WMSL 752) on Sept. 21, 2012. Stratton was delivered to the Coast Guard by Huntington-Ingalls Industries (HII) Sept. 2, 2011 and commissioned into service March 31, 2012.

The recommendation to execute final acceptance of Stratton was made by Vice Adm. John Currier, vice commandant of the Coast Guard, based on input from Coast Guard senior acquisition leaders and other personnel from the engineering and command, control, communications, computers and information technology (C4IT) technical authorities. As part of this process, the Coast Guard contracting officer conducts a final review and adjudication of all contractual requirements related to the Stratton’s acquisition.

The Coast Guard worked closely with the two first-tier contractors, HII and Lockheed Martin, as well as the other contractors to ensure that Stratton meets all Coast Guard mission requirements. The Coast Guard also worked with the U.S. Navy and third-party entities, specifically the Naval Sea Systems Command, to ensure that Stratton meets technical and operational requirements.

Strattonwill continue following its scheduled post-delivery plan, including mission systems and weapons testing, crew certifications for operations and installation of additional intelligence and communication capabilities.

Stratton is named for Captain Dorothy Stratton, who organized and directed the Coast Guard Women’s Reserve group – the SPARS – from 1942 to 1946. NSCs four and five, Hamilton andJames respectively, are now under construction at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss.
