    WHINSEC Earns 2012 Wm J. Perry Award

    In a ceremony at the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies (U.S. National Defense University) in Washington, D.C., on Sep 20, WHINSEC received the 2012 Dr. William J. Perry Award for Excellence in Security and Defense Education. Dr. Perry was the Secretary of Defense who established CHDS in 1997. Created in 2007, the award is given each year to one individual and one institution that have made significant contributions in promoting education, research, outreach and knowledge.     Intermediate Level Education Course - Class of 2012.

    The 48 students who graduated WHINSEC's ILE Course on Wed, May 16, represented several 'firsts.' Three partner-nation and two U.S. students earned the Master of Military Art and Science degree. Unique to WHINSEC, candidates were able to complete their studies in Spanish or English. Another first-a DA civilian graduated this year; future courses will include interagency participation, starting with the U.S. Marshal's Service in July. Students from Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, Panama, and the U.S. received diplomas.

    3rd Annual Current Operations Symposium

    Senior officers from Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico, along with the Vice Minister of Public Security in Costa Rica close out the 3rd Annual Current Operations Symposium with a lively panel discussion of issues relating to disaster management, illicit trafficking, and border security, Fri, Mar 29.

    Fast-Rope Rappelling from a UH-60 Blackhawk

    Fast-rope rappelling from a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter is one of the many subjects these students in the Counterdrug Operations Course learn and practice. Each counterdrug course also goes to the Navy Small Craft Instruction and Technical Training School, Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, for a week of riverine operations with NAVSCIATTS students.

    11th Anniversary

    WHINSEC celebrated its 11th Anniversary in January, 2012, with a video review of its history. During those years, almost 14,000 students representing 34 partner nations took courses at the Institute from its diverse mix of U.S. military and civilian instructors; partner nation instructors, and visiting experts from government and non-governmental agencies.

  • RECENT EVENTS
    Our new campus

    Work has begun to renovate the historic Fort Benning Station Hospital, opened in 1925, to become the permanent campus of WHINSEC. Beginning late 2012, the Institute will move in, with full operation on the site in 2014.

Intermediate Level Education Course
(59 students) conducts training on Operational Art and Design, Negotiations as a Means to Influence Organizations, War in the Modern World, Spectrum of Military Operations, and conducts a Peace Operations Practical Exercise.

Captains Career Course
(31 students) conducts a Tactical Decision Exercise, training on Engineer Obstacle Planning, Counter-Mobility, Company Team Defense, Company Rehearsals, Weapons Positioning, Direct Fire Planning, Engagement Area Development, presents a Defense Operations Order Brief.

Medical Casualty Assistance Course
(26 students) conducts training on Initiating Intravenous Therapy, Pharmacology and Medicine Administration, Invasive Core Skills (Exam), Basic Wound Care, Skin Diseases, Combat Lanes, Sick Call and Medical Disorders, EENT Disorders, Orthopedia, Respiratory Disorders, and Abdominal Disorders.

Operational Information Analyst Course
(33 students) conducts TIP Presentations (Terrorist Groups), End of Course Critique, Out-processes, graduates on Oct 18, 10 a.m. in Marshall Auditorium, McGinnis-Wickham Hall.

NCO Professional Development Course
(48 students) conducts training on Map Reading, Graphics and Overlays, Terrain Association, Land Navigation (Practice and Test Night Phase; Practice and Test Day Phase).

Cadet Leadership Development Course
(161 students) conducts training on Operational Effectiveness, Anti-Terrorism, Combat Stress, U.S Weapons Familiarization, and the Fundamentals of Marksmanship; conducts the Leader Reaction Course.
