Annotation: This four-DVD set uses lecture, questions-and-answers, group exercises, interviews, and videos of program profiles in order to provide training to correctional personnel who work with women offenders, so that they are prepared to build programs and correctional environments that are responsive to women’s needs, particularly regarding vocational/career development.
Abstract: One of the objectives of this training is to present emerging correctional practices based on the risks, strengths, and needs of women in general and women offenders in particular. A second objective is to introduce career theories and assessment tools that have proven effective in identifying the needs and strengths of women offenders. A third objective is to present intervention strategies and case-management models that are based in the distinctive needs and circumstances of women offenders. A fourth objective is appreciating the importance of collaborative relationships in serving and supporting women’s effective reentry into the community after release from jail/prison. A fifth objective of the course is the development of a gender-responsive action plan tailored to the needs and strengths of an individual woman offender. In the first disc, the course guide introduces course objectives, and various activities and lectures are portrayed from a seminar group that focuses on various correctional issues regarding the treatment, management, housing, and services for women offenders both in prison and upon their release. Among the issues addressed in the first disc are the distinctive needs, interests, and strengths of women compared to men, based on research findings; assessment tools that measure an individual’s needs and strengths; and the Women Offenders Case Management Model promoted by the National Institute of Corrections. Other discs in the series focus on career development for women offenders while in prison and after their release. Attention is given to evidence-based approaches.
