This newsletter from the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) highlights recent developments related to the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). |
Abstract:
An update to the implementation of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) shows that most jurisdictions are progressively working to implement the SORNA in advance of the statutory deadline established by Congress, July 27, 2011. As of July 2010, three States: Delaware, Florida, and Ohio had substantially implemented SORNA. This update also provides information on the status of SORNA extension requests and implementation. In addition, in May 2010, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that the State of Florida and State of Delaware had substantially implemented the SORNA. An article highlights how tribal jurisdictions can submit DNA samples from sex offenders for analysis and entry to the FBI under requirements of SORNA. News releases are presented on the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking’s (SMART) 2011 SORNA Workshop to be held in the District of Columbia, the publishing of the proposed SORNA Supplemental Guidelines, and the overview of the 2010 National Symposium and Workshop. Highlights of resources available related to SORNA and sex offenders include: Comprehensive Approaches to Sex Offender Management Grant Program, SORNA Implementation Documents (series of 13), Process for Denial, Revocation, or Limitation of a U.S. Passport, Software Tools Needs Assessment, and Update on SMART Technical Tools. |
