Support to Peacekeeping Operations

U.S. Southern Command is working with regional partners to enhance the peacekeeping capabilities of nations in Central & South America and the Caribbean.

The growth in partner nation capacity to conduct peacekeeping operations is a regional success story. The U.S. Department of Defense has partnered with the Department of State in support of the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI), an ongoing seven-year program to increase peacekeeping capabilities around the world.

Drawing on the existing talents of countries with well-established peacekeeping capabilities, U.S. Southern Command works with regional partners and conducts the annual PKO Americas exercise, which is designed to improve partner nations’ capacity to plan and conduct Peacekeeping Operations.

SOUTHCOM will continue to support GPOI and the development of the Armed Forces of Central America battalion for stability operations within the region.
