Ah – the life of a military family – frequent relocations around the world. It’s no secret at some point in your service member’s career, you’ll hear the words, “Guess what honey, we have orders to move.” Moving is a large part of the military lifestyle and can be exciting and stressful at the same time. This section highlights moving allowances and entitlements as well as providing general information on what to expect. Remember, since no two moves are the same (i.e. moving overseas, moving with children, or making your final move) and benefits can change, you’ll want to check with your transportation office to ensure you have the latest information.

Moving Benefit Highlights 

Spouse Professional Weight Allowance– The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2009 includes an additional weight allowance up to 500 pounds for professional books, papers and equipment or community support activities (PBP&E) that belongs to the service member’s spouse when on Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders. PBP&E does not include commercial products for sale or resale. The service member must request this additional allowance in your pre-moving counseling session and such gear must be identified as “spouse pro-gear.”

Full Replacement Value (FRV) – As of March 2008, shipments of household goods are insured for the greater of $5,000 per shipment or four dollars times the weight of the shipment (in pounds) up to a maximum of $50,000. See “Settling In” for details on the new claims process for FRV.
