USCGC Abbie Burgess (WLM 553)

On September 30, 1996, the keel was laid for Cutter ABBIE BURGESS in Marinette, Wisconsin by the Marinette Marine Corporation. In Marinette, Wisconsin on September 19, 1997 ABBIE BURGESS was placed in special commission and the U.S. Coast Guard took command. A full commissioning ceremony was held on July 31, 1998 at its homeport of Rockland, ME., becoming the third 175ft Keeper Class Coastal Buoy Tender. It is now one of fourteen Keeper Class Buoy Tenders serving the Coast Guard.
ABBIE BURGESS is equipped with excellent technology in computer navigation and buoy positioning. At full displacement ABBIE BURGESS travels at a roaring 12 knots. At 10 knots ABBIE's range is 2,000 miles and she can be underway for five days before replenishing.
ABBIE BURGESS services aids ranging up the Maine Coast from Boothbay Harbor, ME all the way to the Canadian Border and the St. Croix River including aids in the Penobscot and St. George rivers. The crew of the ABBIE BURGESS is responsible for 336 lighted and unlighted floating aids and also helps service aids from other Coast Guard units when necessary. NOAA (National Oceanographic Atmospheric Association) has also called on ABBIE BURGESS to help them with their offshore weather buoys.
