Foreign Force Member Health Care Option

Foreign force members and their dependents may receive medical care in the United States through the Foreign Force Member Department of Defense (DoD) health care option.

Eligibility
To qualify, foreign force members and their dependents must be in the U.S. on orders doing business with the Department of Defense. Learn more about eligibility for foreign force members and their families.

Health Care Benefits
Benefits are not the same for all foreign force members. You should visit the Force Health Protection Web site to learn about your country's specific health care agreements. In general, you may be eligible for one or both of the following:

  • Care in military treatment facilities (MTFs) only
  • Care from MTFs and from civilian outpatient providers

If you have an emergency, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

If Eligible for MTF Care Only
(Members from countries that have an active Reciprocal Health Care Agreement)

Reciprocal Health Care Agreements provide all health care within the capability and capacity of a DoD MTF. An MTF is a military clinic, hospital, or medical center. You will receive routine, urgent, specialty or preventive health care at an MTF. A primary physician will likely be assigned to you and your family at your local MTF.

If Eligible for MTF Care and Care from Civilian Outpatient Providers
(Members from countries that have signed a Status of Forces Agreement)

Active duty foreign force members must have a DoD referral for civilian outpatient care. Family members do not need a DoD referral and may obtain care using TRICARE Standard rules. You should contact a Beneficiary Counseling and Assistance Coordinator for assistance at any time.

Family members who are eligible for care outside of an MTF are also eligible for TRICARE's pharmacy benefits. You can get prescriptions filled at no cost from the MTF pharmacy or use the home delivery and retail pharmacy options. Learn more about filling prescriptions

If you still have questions, please contact a Beneficiary Counseling and Assistance Coordinator or your home country embassy for assistance with general health care coverage questions, costs and referrals for civilian care.
