Archive services

Stars and Stripes makes most of its editions from 1948 through 1999 available as searchable PDFs online at Stars and Stripes Digital Archives. Membership rates for the digital archive range from $4.95 for a single day, $7.95 per month, or $47.40 annually. Our archives date back to 1942 for the European edition and 1945 for the Pacific edition. We are in the process of digitizing World War II content and will add those editions to the digital archive as soon as they are completed.

The Stars and Stripes library staff provides research services for the portions of the archive not currently available online. To contact the library staff, e-mail information@stripes.osd.mil.

Reprint services

Stars and Stripes provides photocopies of archived articles for $10. Additional articles published in the same calendar month are $3.

Photo reproduction

Reproductions of Stars and Stripes staff photographs are available through special request. Please provide as much detail as possible (date, photographer, location, description of image, link if image appeared online, etc.) and e-mail your request to Photo Request.

Archive searches

If the date of an item’s publication is unknown, our library staff can conduct a search for the article or photograph in our archives.

Digital archive searches, which include either staff-written or military-related articles from the European edition since 1984 and from the Pacific edition since 1999, are provided at no additional cost. Searches for all other articles during that time period, as well as material prior to these dates, require a manual search. The fee is $50 for a search of papers published over a one-month period.

To increase the odds of a successful manual search, it’s important to narrow the search field as much as possible. Details about when a story was published, where it appeared in the paper and whether photos appeared with the story give our librarians a better chance of locating the article in question.

To request a search, download and complete our Search Request Form and send it along with a $50 check or money order payable to Stars and Stripes to the address below:
