CONGRESSMAN AUSTRIA ANNOUNCES DOT GRANT FOR COLUMBUS REGIONAL AIRPORT AUTHORITY PROJECT

Washington, D.C. –The Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded a $16 million grant that will upgrade to two roads linking to Rickenbacker airport and Intermodal Facility to US 23.  Congressman Austria, a member of the Appropriation Committee, began working with the region in 2008 and supported language for this project.

“These funds will provide local governments the necessary resources needed for critical infrastructure to continue economic growth at Rickenbacker.  This grant will allow easier and more efficient access for businesses to operate and grow at Rickenbacker Airport and Intermodal Facility.  During these difficult budget constraints, our region has partnered together to move the East-West Connector forward to attract businesses and create new opportunities for long term sustainable jobs,” said Congressman Austria. “It is estimated the construction alone will contribute to nearly 900 jobs with a long-term jobs impact totaling approximately 12,000; which is important for our region and Ohio.”

In addition, the East-West Connector will save $106 million attributed to shipping delays, $744 million due to commuter delays, and 45 million CO2 emissions avoided.  When the project is completed, modifying Duvall Rd and Ashville Pike, the route will be designated as State Route 762. Construction on Duvall Road is scheduled to begin in September of 2012 and Ashville Pike is scheduled to begin in May of 2013.
