Veterans Upward Bound

Beginning or returning to college can be challenging, especially when you’ve taken time off from school to serve in the military. The U.S. Department of Education has created Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) to help you overcome obstacles and prepare for college success.

Through Veterans Upward Bound, Veterans receive refresher courses in:

  • Math
  • Laboratory science
  • Composition
  • Reading
  • Literature
  • Foreign languages
  • Computer skills

In addition, VUB can help you apply and stay on track with the following services:

  • Assistance with college applications
  • Academic advising and career counseling
  • Help with GI Bill and financial aid applications
  • Tutoring and study skills assistance

VUB understands the obstacles many Veterans face when they return from serving, and welcomes Veterans who meet the eligibility requirements for income and at least one required category of service*:

  • Active Duty: You must have at least 180 days of Active Duty service, or if less than 180 days, you must be discharged or released because of a service-connected disability.
  • Reserve: You must be a member of a Reserve Component of the Armed Forces called to Active Duty for a period of more than 30 days.
  • 9/11: You must be a member of a Reserve Component of the Armed Forces who served on Active Duty in support of a contingency operation on or after September 11, 2001.
  • Income: All participants must be either low-income (based on Family income and number of dependents) or potential first-generation college students (neither parent earned a four-year degree).

*All discharges qualify except dishonorable discharges.

If you’re ready to take the next step in completing your education, visit the Veterans Upward Bound website and choose your state or territory from the “VUB Program Locator” drop-down menu. You can succeed in college—and Veterans Upward Bound can help.
