Getting Fit Beyond the Exercise Plan

An important part of making healthy lifestyle choices is committing to achieving and maintaining physical fitness.  During July, the military health system features information about total fitness, including a number of get fit tips worth considering when developing fitness plans.

  • Get a physical. Have your primary care manager check for any health risk before stepping into a boxing ring, on a treadmill or trying a new diet plan.
  • Water, water and more water. Remain hydrated by making drinking water a habit, but be careful not to over hydrate.
  • Healthy eating habits. The old adage, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” still rings true. Proper nutrition can help fuel the body for the daily grind. Instead of a donut, try a few walnuts or cantaloupe slices for a snack.
  • Tobacco cessation. What good is lifting weights or swimming laps if a person lights a cigarette after a workout? Physical activity is not a counterbalance to smoking. Consider quitting the use of tobacco and tobacco-related products.
  • Manufacturers of supplements do not need approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in order to sell their products to the public. Before taking supplements, talk to a medical professional.
  • Proper equipment is an important part of safety and may help prevent injuries during physical activity. For instance, runners should wear proper footwear and cyclists should ensure proper helmet fit.

Fitness is a way of life. Just a few changes may translate into a longer and healthier life.
