Getting Care When Traveling


You are covered while traveling on business, vacation or when you are moving from one location to another. We recommend that you get any routine care before you travel.

How you get care when you're traveling depends on your TRICARE plan and where you are going. So we can give you the most accurate information, please enter your profile.

If you have an emergency, go to the nearest emergency room. In some cases, you may need to pay up front and file a claim for reimbursement.

  • Keep all receipts so you can file claims if you need to when you get home.
  • If traveling overseas, claims are filed with the overseas contractor.

Here are the basic rules for each plan:

TRICARE Prime Options
TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Prime Remote, TRICARE Prime Overseas, TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas, TRICARE Young Adult-Prime Option

You must have a referral from your primary care manager (PCM) for urgent care. If you go to an emergency room, contact your PCM or regional contractor as soon as possible after you receive emergency care. Routine care is not authorized for active duty service members.

TRICARE Standard Options
TRICARE Standard and Extra, TRICARE Standard Overseas, TRICARE Young Adult-Standard Option

You may visit any TRICARE-authorized provider. You'll save money if you find a network provider. If traveling overseas, you may visit any overseas provider.

Please Note: If traveling to the Philippines, you must select a provider from the Philippines Certified Provider List.

Reserve Component Purchased Care Options
TRICARE Reserve Select, TRICARE Retired Reserve

You may visit any TRICARE-authorized provider. You'll save money if you find a network provider. If traveling overseas, you may visit any overseas provider.

TRICARE For Life
You may visit any Medicare provider for care. If traveling overseas, (in locations other than U.S. Territories), TRICARE becomes the primary payer. You'll file claims with the overseas claims processor instead of the TFL contractor.

US Family Health Plan
Including the TRICARE Young Adult-Prime Option when you enroll with US Family Health Plan provider.

You must coordinate all care with your designated provider.
