Holocaust Remembrance

Holocaust derives from the Greek holo kaustos, meaning burnt whole. Yom Hashoah, a Hebrew phrase, refers to the Holocaust Remembrance Day, a day set aside for remembering victims of Nazi Germany's campaign of state-sponsored persecution and murder of European Jews and other ethnic groups from 1933-1945. Created by act of Congress in 1980, The United States Holocaust Memorial Council was mandated to establish a day of Remembrance as our nation's annual commemoration of victims of the Holocaust. This year's commemoration date is April 15, 2007. International Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27) is an annual day of remembrance designated by an official resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, 1 November 2005.
