Much has been heard in recent years about the neglect and the consequent deterioration of the nation’s public infrastructure--the publicly-financed structures and facilities that support essential functions necessary for commerce and the health, safety, and welfare of its citizenry. The public infrastructure includes the bridges, highways, rail lines, power lines, pipelines, dams, waterways, water treatment plants, and other publicly-owned or publicly-regulated structures and ground facilities that are used for transportation (land, water, and air), telecommunications, power generation and distribution, water supply and water and wastewater treatment, and waste disposal.
This guide, an update of TB 91-2, furnishes a review of the literature in the collections of the Library of Congress about the public infrastructure, its history and development, and proposals for its maintenance and improvement. Not intended as a comprehensive bibliography, this compilation is designed--as the name of the series implies--to put the reader "on target."
