The Guide covers doctoral programs in United States and Canadian departments of English, other modern languages, and comparative literature. For this edition of the Guide, more than 340 doctorate-granting departments in the United States and Canada that the MLA contacted in April 2005 have provided at least some information about their doctoral programs.Entries include information about:
Departments' participation in and provision of information for the Guide is voluntary, and not all departments provided information on all topics. Blank radio buttons and data boxes indicate that the department chose not to respond to a particular question. The absence of a particular university or program from the Guide does not necessarily mean no program exists and implies no judgment on the part of the MLA. Students seeking to locate programs of a particular type or in a specific geographic area should check additional on-line and other resources, such as university Web sites.
