Roller Girls of the Apocalypse

Women skaters roll through first season as derby competitors.

Kaiserslautern, Germany’s Roller Girls of the Apocalypse, a roller derby club made up mostly of American women affiliated with the U.S. military, closed out its first full season Saturday.

It comes three months after the governing body for the sport of women’s flat track roller derby, the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, accepted the club into its apprenticeship program.

The double-header, billed as “Knocktoberfest,” had RGA scrapping with skaters from France and The Netherlands before a sold-out crowd in Kaiserslautern.

In addition to active-duty military members, military spouses and contractors, RGA includes a handful of Germans and expats from other nations.
