You may know that the Naval Academy was built on the grounds of Fort Severn, an old Army post that guarded the entrance to the Severn River. But that wasn't the only fort that was located on the present-day grounds of the Academy. Our newest staff member, history professor and professional archaeologist Mechelle Kerns Galway, has been leading a project to find the remains of Fort Madison, an earth and brick fort built on the north side of the river in 1809 and used during the War of 1812 and the Civil War. She will be giving a presentation about her findings on Friday, October 19 at 7:30 in Sampson Hall, room G14. Outside visitors will need to show a photo ID at the gate to gain entrance to the Yard.
