8/28/2012 - JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas  -- Seven slots are available for eligible captains interested in attending the Inter-American Air Forces Academy Squadron Officer School Program, with applications due to the Air Force Personnel Center the last week of October, AFPC officials said.

The school mirrors the SOS at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., according to Capt. Raymond Hoffman, AFPC force development operations section chief.

"In addition to SOS objectives - like developing dynamic Airmen ready to lead air, space and cyberspace power in an expeditionary war-fighting environment - IAAFA program objectives also focus on developing inter-Americanism in potential Latin American regional affairs specialists," he said. "Including USAF officers in this program enriches the pool of officers available to serve in roles that require interaction with Latin American countries and forces."

Qualification and eligibility requirements include active duty captains with 4-7 years of total active federal commissioned service, Spanish proficiency on the Defense Language Proficiency Test, excellent communication skills, and a professional military image, Hoffman noted. All final candidates will also participate in an oral Spanish interview.

Captains who have attended or are scheduled to attend SOS in-residence are not eligible to apply, nor are those with active unfavorable information files, who were deferred for promotion, or who have limiting temporary profiles.

Candidates must be recommended by their squadron and group commanders (or equivalents), and endorsed by their senior raters.

Interested officers can sit in on an Oct. 2 webinar, at 8 a.m. central time, where subject matter experts from the IAAFA program and the personnel center will be on hand to answer questions. To access the webinar, go to https://connect.dco.dod.mil/r13749722.
