  1. I did a good interview with Eliot Spitzer last night on several issues, including making sure our democracy works the way it's supposed to in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. We have to make sure everyone gets the resources they need to recover, no matter who they are, where they live or how much money they make.
  2. If anyone wants to know how to help Sandy victims recover, check government agency websites and donate money before you donate goods. We're hearing there's not enough time or manpower to sort through solid items right now. People are going to need the basics of their lives rebuilt -- consider the best ways to make that process quicker and easier. Please help if you can.
  3. An important point about responsible governing in the New York Times: "Over the last two years, Congressional Republicans have forced a 43 percent reduction in FEMA disaster preparedness grants. Representatives Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor and other House Republicans have repeatedly tried to refuse FEMA’s budget requests when disasters are more expensive than predicted."
  4. For the latest news on Hurricane Sandy, including a directory of emergency Red Cross shelters, visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency blog and website. Call local emergency officials if you're in immediate trouble. Don't wait any longer to make emergency preparations. Flooding could still occur for hours or days longer.
  5. There's a good new article about the risks of relying on drone strikes in this morning's Washington Post. As the author notes, "It builds resentment, facilitates terrorist recruitment and alienates those we should seek to inspire. Drone strikes may decapitate terrorist organizations, but they do not solve our terrorist problem."
  6. I read to a great group of pre-schoolers in Yuma yesterday as part of Reach Out and Read, which gets people reading to young kids as a way to encourage learning and literacy. Distributing books to students is an important public service, especially in underserved areas, and I was so happy to participate.
  7. I held a jobs workshop for Yuma-area veterans yesterday that went great -- we had good turnout and a lot of good questions and answers. Like I told KSWT, we have tens of thousands of homeless veterans in this country and we never want to repeat the policy mistakes we made in the past.
