The first superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Lt. Gen. Hubert Harmon, was also one of the individuals most influential in establishing the Academy as a successful educational institution. He became superintendent Aug. 14, 1954, at the Academy's temporary home of Lowry Air Force Base, Colo., after being called back to active duty from retirement Nov. 8, 1953.
Then Maj. Gen. James Briggs became the Academy's second superintendent Aug. 1, 1956, and guided the operation of the new Academy during two of its three years at Lowry AFB. He also oversaw the Academy's move to its permanent campus north of Colorado Springs in August 1958.
