The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District is removing approximately 40,000 cubic yards of sediment/shoals from the authorized limits of the federal navigation channel in the lower reaches of the Buffalo River.

Team members from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District, talked to students at SUNY Buffalo State College during a networking event, hosted by the Buffalo State Career Development Center, as part of Hispanic Heritage month, Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012. A few of the topics covered by the team were, about the Corps, job searching, interview techniques, perfecting your elevator speech and a resume critique.
NWP-led USACE Forward Response Dive and Survey Team have facilitated an underwater inspection at USAG Daegu, Pier 8, Busan South Korea, 08-12 Oct 2012. Adding to the true international tenor of this ERDC mission was the crew assistance and vessel support received by the South Korean Army.
A ceremonial tree planting, by VIPs and an Eagle Scout, took place on October 9, 2012 to showcase the $500 thousand first phase of an aquatic invasive plant species removal project, under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, at Times Beach Nature Preserve. Rep. Brian Higgins and Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz joined U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District Commander LTC Owen Beaudoin for a ceremonial tree planting at the site. Partnering with Erie County, the City of Buffalo and the Friends of Times Beach, a variety of mechanical and chemical methods will be used to remove invasive species and replant with native species under the auspices of the Corps
The sailors of the USACE Buffalo District Floating Plant began working on repairs to the Bird Island Pier in Buffalo, NY, on Oct. 5, 2012. The work is being done as a regular operations and maintenance repair of the structure, using funds contributed by the City of Buffalo from a grant provided by the Niagara River Greenway Commission for that purpose. The repair work will shore damage to the top of the structure which supports the recreational walkway. The walkway has been closed south of the Peace Bridge since August 2010, and the planned repair work is expected to allow a portion of it to be reopened for public use in 2013.
