The worth of a multinational environment was well proven when a Hungarian contingent joined the Italian MSU in June 04. Working closely together both contingents have formed a well-balanced and integrated Unit with many varied tasks.

Following the authorization given by the Hungarian Parliament the Hungarian Defense Forces have taken part in the IFOR/SFOR activities since 1995. The first deployed unit was an engineer contingent who contributed in the reconstruction of the Old Bridge in Mostar. After withdrawing the engineers in 2002, Hungary offered a Multinational Specialized Unit to SFOR with a maximum strength of 200 troops. The deployment was carried out in two steps and finished in June 2002, integrating the Hungarians into the Italian MSU. The unit's main responsibility is Crowd and Riot Control (CRC) but is also able to carry out many varied and different tasks.
The troopers of the Hungarian MSU Contingent are from the 1st Light Cavalry Regiment situated in Szolnok. The regiment was formed to assist in crisis areas both nationally and internationally, which require military involvement. These tasks can cover Peace Support Operations, anti-terrorist actions, hostage rescue, search and rescue operations and others.

The fifth rotation of the Contingent had been training in Hungary for six weeks. During their training, they received information about the AO and expected tasks then carried out some practical preparation. This training then continued after the unit arrived in theatre on 18 June 2004 within the MSU framework. After practicing special procedures and tactics the 'Delta" Coy carried out the closing exercise in front of the MSU Commander and was authorized on 3 July 2004 to commence its mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
