A graduate of the United States Military Academy, Brigadier General Schook was commissioned as a Regular Army Infantry Officer. As a field grade officer, Brigadier General Schook was assigned to 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized) where he served as S-3 (Operations) for 2d Brigade and as Executive Officer, 2d Battalion, 12th Infantry. He then served as Assignment Officer, Infantry Branch, United States Army Personnel Command, Alexandria, Virginia.

Brigadier General Schook subsequently assumed command of 2d Battalion, 7th U.S. Cavalry "Garry Owen," 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Upon graduation from the United States Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, he commanded a separate brigade of six battalions and 6000 soldiers, the 3rd Brigade, 3d Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Benning, Georgia.

In 1997 through 2002, Brigadier General Schook served on the Joint Staff as Chief, Conventional War Plans Division; and later as Chief, Joint Doctrine Division, Operational Plans and Interoperability, J-7. Subsequently, he served as the Executive Officer to the Commanding General, United States Army Forces Command, Fort McPherson, Georgia.

Brigadier General Schook's flag assignments include Chief of Staff, III Corps, Fort Hood, Texas, and Assistant Division Commander, 1st Cavalry Division. Brigadier General Schook also served as Director, Human Resources Policy Directorate, HQDA, and most recently, he served as the Chief of Staff, Kosovo Force (Main), Pristina, Camp Bondsteel. He assumed command of SFOR on 5 October 2004.

Brigadier General Schook's decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, NATO Non-Article V Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Army Achievement Medal, and the Gold Cross of the German Bundeswehr. He has also been awarded the Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder, Ranger Tab, Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge, and the Department of the Army Staff Badge.

Brigadier General Schook was born and raised in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. He and his wife, Kathleen, reside in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. They have two children: John and Katie, and a golden retriever, Maize. His hobbies/interests include basketball, golf, and reading of classics.
