The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station community alert siren system will be tested Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to noon.

During this annual test, sirens will be heard in San Clemente, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, State Parks, Camp Pendleton and the unincorporated areas of Orange County. All sirens will be sounded several times for approximately three minutes, according to Chris Abel, the plant’s community-outreach manager.

To prepare for the unlikely event of a nuclear emergency, federal regulations require annual testing of the siren system. 

The plant’s community-outreach officials will host an open house Oct. 30 at the Vista Civic Center from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. This event is designed to engage the community, respond to inquiries about the plant and educate residents on the benefits of nuclear energy. There will be information booths focusing on various areas of the plant including emergency planning, steam generators, safety and community partnerships, said Abel.
