U.S. CHAMBER PRESENTS ANNUAL "SPIRIT OF ENTERPRISE" AWARD TO REPRESENTATIVE JOHN R. CARTER
04/09/08Washington, Apr 9, 2008 -
The United States Chamber of Commerce today presented Representative Carter (R-Round Rock), Republican Conference Secretary, with its prestigious “Spirit of Enterprise” award for his strong voting record on critical business issues.
“I am honored to accept this award from the U.S. Chamber,” Representative Carter said. “Passing legislation that helps our business community is very important to me, and to the residents of the 31st District of Texas.”
“The business community depends on solid partnerships on Capitol Hill to help grow the economy and create new jobs for hardworking Americans,” Tom Donohue, Chamber president and CEO, said. “This award recognizes those lawmakers who have demonstrated leadership on important business issues such as trade, investment, and transportation.
“Representative Carter has proven to be an effective ally to the business community, supporting legislation that helps grow the economy and creates new jobs for hardworking Americans,” Donahue said. “The Chamber is grateful for John’s commitment to these important issues and is proud to present him with this award.”
The Chamber’s prestigious “Spirit of Enterprise” award is given annually to members of Congress based on rankings it gives for key business votes outlined in its yearly publication, How They Voted. This is the twentieth year that the U.S. Chamber has formally honored the accomplishments of this select group of members of Congress.
The Chamber’s designated “key votes’’ are recorded floor votes on issues established as priorities by the Chamber, on which the Chamber informs Congress of its position prior to the vote. Senate and House members who support the Chamber’s position on at least 70% of these key votes receive the “Spirit of Enterprise” award.
During the first session of the 110th Congress, the Chamber key-voted 11 Senate and 20 House votes, including a trade promotion agreement with Peru, an extension of the Andean Trade Preference Act, an extension of the federal backstop for terrorism risk insurance, revisions to the rules governing direct foreign investment, and critical water resources legislation to facilitate commerce at the nation’s waterways and ports.
