TEACHER FROM CHISHOLM TRAIL MIDDLE SCHOOL SELECTED FOR WORKSHOP

Carter Nominated Kellie Fauver for Prestigious Teacher Institute Program

Washington, D.C., Jun 7, 2006 - U.S. Representative John R. Carter (TX-31) is pleased to announce that Kellie Fauver, a teacher at Chisholm Trail Middle School, has been selected to participate in Southwest Vistas: The Border in American History, an institute sponsored by Humanities Texas, the nonprofit state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the University of Texas at El Paso. At the institute, teachers will attend lectures and participate in workshops that examine U.S. history and Texas history through the broader perspective of the Western hemisphere.

“I congratulate Kellie and our other Texas educators for being chosen for this unique educational opportunity. It is my hope that Kellie will be able to use the lessons learned at the institute to enhance the learning experience for her students in the classroom,” Congressman Carter said.

“Humanities Texas is pleased to sponsor such an exciting educational initiative,” said Michael L. Gillette, executive director. “As border issues receive attention in the public dialogue, it’s essential that teachers and students understand the rich history and culture of the region.”

Michael Topp, chair of the University of Texas at El Paso Department of History, emphasized that this is a unique and important educational opportunity for Texas teachers. “Participants will return to the classroom with fresh ideas and strategies for teaching Texas, U.S., and world history.”

Fauver, a Texas history teacher nominated by Congressman Carter for this opportunity, is one of 41 classroom teachers who will attend a series of workshops to be held at the University of Texas at El Paso from June 11- June 14.
