Milano, Taylor & Temple Fire Departments Receive Grants

Washington, Nov 2, 2005 -

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative John Carter (TX-31) is pleased to announce that the Milano Volunteer Fire Department, Taylor Fire Department and Temple Fire & Rescue have been awarded grants by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The Milano Volunteer Fire Department will receive $74,044, Taylor Fire Department will receive $16,933, and Temple Fire and Rescue will receive $49,920.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security and is designed as an opportunity for the United States Congress to work with FEMA to enhance basic fire service delivery across the United States.  Grants totaling $650 million will be awarded this year to purchase firefighting equipment, conduct fire education and prevention programs, enhance EMS programs, and fund firefighter health and safety programs.  The grants awarded in District 31 will go towards purchasing personal protective equipment and funding wellness and fitness programs.

“Firefighters offer a crucial service to the citizens of District 31,” Carter said. “These grants will ensure that the men and women at these fire departments have the tools they need to protect the community and themselves.”

Grants are awarded on a competitive basis to applicants that address AFG program priorities, establish financial need, and demonstrate the benefit resulting from their operations.

Earlier this year, Carter held a workshop that was attended by 15 Fire Chiefs and their grant writers from around the district.  The workshop was led by Carol McCoy, a Field Representative for FEMA. McCoy educated the workshop participants on the FEMA F.I.R.E. (Firefighter Investment and Response Enhancement) grant program.  The attendees learned how FEMA could help their departments and how to write a successful FEMA Grant.
