DEMOCRATS REFUSE TO FUND VETERANS BEFORE VETERANS DAY

Washington, Nov 9, 2007 -  House Republican Conference Secretary John Carter (R-TX), a member of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee, issued the following statement today after House Democrats refused to complete work on a veterans’ housing, health care and benefits bill before Veterans Day.

“The House overwhelmingly passed the veterans funding bill 146 days ago, and we still have not sent the bill to the President to be signed into law. All year long, Democrats have been talking about taking care of our nation’s veterans, but they have yet to put their money where their mouth is.

“On Monday, America will honor our veterans and troops for the sacrifices they’ve made to protect our freedom. Yet today, the last legislative day before Veterans Day, the Majority party is deliberately disrespecting our veterans by refusing to give them the funds and resources they need.”

Note: House Republican leaders sent House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) a letter urging her to appoint conferees to the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs funding bill. To date, Democratic leaders have not only delayed the bill, but voted against 10 GOP proposals to complete work on the bill.

Marty Conatser, national commander of the 2.7 million-member American Legion, suggested in a news release that, “Sen. Reid personally assured me that the MilCon-VA appropriations bill would be passed by Veterans Day,” adding “this appropriations bill has been held up far too long.”
