CARTER ANNOUNCES $1.4 MILLION TO TEXAS FOR KATRINA AID

Washington, Mar 31, 2006 -

WASHINGTON, D.C. –U.S. Representative John Carter (TX-31) announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has distributed $142,208,000 to Texas to help offset the medical costs associated with offering care to thousands of Hurricane Katrina evacuees who fled to Texas. Congress allotted $2 billion to help states offset these costs in the Deficit Reduction Act, which was signed into law in February. The funding will be used primarily to reimburse state Medicaid programs. However, special reimbursement grants may become available to providers who cared for those ineligible for Medicaid but unable to pay for their medical care.

“The State of Texas has generously supported hurricane victims as they struggle to put their lives together. The kindness of states such as Texas allowed thousands of displaced individuals to receive quality medical care. I also applaud the Administration for acting so quickly to reimburse the State of Texas for providing Medicaid a number of hurricane victims so they might continue to offer quality care,” Congressman Carter said.
