Relocation Resources for Military Leaders

There are several valuable resources available to military leaders assisting service members and their families in relocating.  Each family has different concerns and needs.  Some families, for example, will need additional support to assist their non-military spouse in finding employment, assist their children with the relocation process, choose schools or child care, or to transition a special needs dependent to their new home.  MilitaryINSTALLATIONS, Military OneSource, and the Relocation Program each provide valuable information about moving benefits and resources to service members when they are preparing to relocate.

MilitaryINSTALLATIONS is a searchable directory of worldwide installation and state-related military information, programs, and services. It provides easy access to fast facts, articles, website resource directories, photos, contact information, major units, weather, and maps. With this resource, users can quickly find relevant information about any installation or military resources in their state. Learning about a new community was never easier.

Military OneSource offers personalized support to military leaders and service members and  DoD civilian personnel designated as Civilian Expeditionary Workforce by telephone or through their website.  They have a research team dedicated to fulfilling personalized requests for information as well as a database of currently available information on issues relevant to military life, including relocation.  They also offer twelve free in-person counseling sessions  per person, per issue to help service members and their families address a number of issues or concerns, including the stressors caused by the relocation process.  For those unable to attend face-to-face counseling, Military OneSource arranges telephone and online consultations. To contact Military OneSource by phone, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, call Stateside at 1-800-342-9647. The Military OneSource website lists specific dialing information for other countries.

The Relocation Assistance Program (RAP) is the main military resource for service members and their families going through relocation.  The RAP can provide destination area information, relocation counseling, housing information, lending closets for basic household goods, and sponsorship support.

In addition to these three resources, Plan My Move is a helpful resource available through MilitaryHOMEFRONT, providing access to information about entitlements and benefits, to points of contact, checklists, planning tools, and information on education and employment opportunities.
