Veterans receive a warm welcome

A group of wounded warriors from Walter Reed Medical Center knew they'd get VIP treatment when they arrived to St. Simons Island Wednesday to attend the McGladrey Classic golf tournament, which starts today and ends Sunday.

While they knew they had a full schedule that includes gourmet meals, island tours and a perfect view of the tournament from the ninth hole, they weren't told about the reception they would receive when their bus exited the F.J. Torras Causeway onto Kings Way.

The bus that took them from Jacksonville International Airport to St. Simons was led by a police escort, with lights flashing and sirens blaring.

When the bus got onto the island, the first thing the wounded warriors saw was a crowd of nearly 200 flag-waving people. Some held signs with messages such as "Welcome home, you are awesome," and "Thank you for your service."

The warriors opened the windows on the bus and waved in appreciation to the cheering crowd.

George Crain of St. Simons Island said he showed up to greet the group because he wanted to show his appreciation for the sacrifices the warriors have made for his country.

"I think it lifts their spirits to see people behind their efforts," he said.

Crain's wife, Sue, said the welcome serves as a good first impression of St. Simons Island residents to the warriors.

"Hopefully, this will make them feel as special as we think they are," she said.

The warriors were invited to the tournament as part of the event's Military Appreciation Day. The Sierra Nevada Corp. and local donations paid for the visit.

Ann Miles of St. Simons Island said she was pleased so many people turned out to greet the soldiers.

"I think it will take their breath away," she said. "I'd really like to hear the response from them."

The veterans were treated to a concert by country musician Gary Allan on Wednesday night. Today, they are scheduled to meet the two Republicans that represent Georgia in the U.S. Senate, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson. U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, R-1, will address them during a luncheon.

Jan Campbell, whose husband John helped organize some of the events the warriors will enjoy during their visit, was impressed with the turnout.

"I thought it was great," she said. "It was just wonderful. It was just an amazing effort by everyone."

The soldiers are scheduled to return to Walter Reed Friday.
