Chief Musician E. Andrew Carlson,

Chief Musician Andy Carlson, a native of Chicago, Ill., joined the Navy Band in 1991.  He earned a Bachelor of Music Education from Illinois State University and a Master of Music from Indiana University. Carlson studied tuba performance with Arnold Jacobs, Harvey Phillips, Ed Livingston, and Dave Kirk.  While at IU, he won the job of principal tubist of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Santiago Chile and played there for three seasons. Upon his return to the U.S. he moved to Dallas, Texas, where he was principal tubist of the Dallas Wind Symphony for four years. During that time he was the principal sub with the Dallas Symphony, Ft. Worth Symphony, Dallas Opera, and low brass instructor at Texas Christian University. Other performance experiences include the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería in Mexico, and interim principal of the Richmond Symphony.


While in the Navy, Carlson commissioned two concerti, performing their world premieres at international conferences, and he performed solos on several national Navy Band tours.  He was an associate editor of the ITEA Journal and continues to be a clinician and adjudicator on Interservice Military Music panels and tuba instructor at Catholic University of America.  Carlson is the leader of the renowned Tuba/Euphonium Quartet and is the manager of the Navy Band Chamber Recital Series. In addition to his music degrees, Carlson is an ordained interfaith minister and is studying spiritual counseling.
