RIGA, Latvia — The guided-missile frigate USS Carr (FFG 52) completed a four-day port visit to Riga, Latvia, Aug. 13.

While in port, the U.S. ambassador to Latvia, Amb. Judith Garber, hosted a reception aboard Carr, where she welcomed dozens of guests, city leaders, and Latvian dignitaries to the ship.

“We are excited to have Carr in Latvia,” Garber said. “This reinforces our partnership with Latvia, and helps us relate our shared values.

Carr Sailors also took time out to visit with local children at an orphanage and a children’s hospital in Riga. At the orphanage, Sailors painted walls, repaired furniture, and interacted with the children. Residents and counselors of the facility repaid the Sailor’s kindness by hosting a traditional Latvian barbeque prepared by the children at the orphanage.

“I appreciated the opportunity to meet the children and to help out,” said Midshipman 1st Class Ronald Willis. “It’s rewarding to interact with the children and to see smiles on their faces.”

Ambassador Garber reiterated that sentiment. “Everyone here appreciates the volunteer work Carr Sailors have done in Latvia,” the Ambassador explained.

Carr is homeported in Norfolk, Va., and is on a three-month deployment supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.
