Information on service medals, campaign medals, and service ribbons Service medals, campaign medals, and service ribbons denote participation by a service member in a campaign, war, national emergency, expedition, or the fulfillment of specified Service requirements in a creditable manner. Those awards take precedence immediately after nonmilitary decorations and are normally worn in the order earned. However, actual precedence varies depending on the Service member’s branch of Military Service. Policies and procedures for non-Defense service awards and their appurtenances are determined by the Secretary concerned and, as such, appropriate Military Service regulations should be consulted in determining a Service member’s entitlement to a particular award.
