10/5/2012 - MOUNTAIN HOME AFB, Idaho -- The first weekend of October is a beautiful time. Leaves are changing colors and the air feels fresh as the crispness of fall takes hold after a long, hot summer. It's peaceful, quiet even, until...kickoff.

Oct. 5 marks the 45th occurrence of the Air Force vs. Navy football game, a series Air Force leads 27-17.

Make no mistake, this game counts. It is the first game that affects the final destination of the Commander-in-Chief's trophy, which is awarded to the top finisher among the three military academies. But what matters more than the trophy is pride, which is always on the line when playing against another service. While we are brothers-in-arms on the battle field, we are fierce competitors on the playing field. Players will hit harder, run faster and reach deeper.

Two of those players are sponsored by the 366th Fighter Wing - Cadet Third Class Dylan Bungum, a sophomore defensive end, and Cadet Fourth Class Garrett Griffin, a freshman tight end. Both are on Air Force's varsity squad and have seen playing time this season.

"The sponsorship builds relationships between the players and the Air Force, reminding them that they're not just playing for the Air Force Academy, they're playing for something bigger than themselves," said Lt. Col. Darryl Sumrall, 366th Aerospace Medicine commander. "Players take pride in representing the Air Force Mission and Airmen."

During the football season, Bungum and Griffin can receive messages from anyone in the 366th FW and Gunfighters are encouraged to send letters to:

Saturday's game takes place at 9:30 a.m. at Falcon Stadium in Colorado Springs, CO. and will be televised live.
